OUR STORY

Established 1973.

The Barracks is a long-established hunter/jumper barn located in Charlottesville, Virginia. Owned and operated by the Bishop family since 1973, The Barracks specializes in boarding, training, selling, and showing hunters, jumpers, and equitation horses. We welcome new clients of all levels – from beginners to serious show competitors – and offer a lesson program aligned to the needs of each student.

Riders at the Barracks also enjoy hunting with the Farmington Hunt Club during hunt season. Mr. Thomas Bishop, xMFH and previously fieldmaster, is currently a whipper-in with the hunt.

The Barracks was the proud founder and home of UVA Riding, the University of Virginia’s equestrian team, from 1976 to 2026. For 50 years, The Barracks supported generations of collegiate riders competing in Zone 4, Region 2 of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association (IHSA). As a UVA club sport, the team competes through the University’s Club Sports program.
